<image:title>About - Kathy Jones</image:title>
<image:caption>After graduating with a Bachelor of Environmental Science from Macquarie University in 2003, Kathy worked as an Environmental Consultant in contaminated land, learning many practical fieldwork skills in industry. In 2017 she began a Bachelor of Education (Secondary, Geography and Science: Bio & EES) and started working as an Environmental Educator, whilst studying, specialising in Fieldwork. Kathy has always spent a lot of time outdoors in the Australian bush and believes that if we are to truly understand how an environment functions we need to immerse ourselves whilst making observations and collecting data. She thoroughly enjoys educating people of all ages, not only in the function of an ecosystem but also geographically, understanding how humans have impacted upon it and how it is ultimately managed.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - Fieldwork Connections</image:title>
<image:caption>Through working in Environmental Education and tertiary studies to become a secondary school teacher, Kathy became acutely aware of the need for a deeper understanding of Geography through fieldwork. Fieldwork Connections aims to connect teachers and students to the world around them through simple, accessible and meaningful Geographical Fieldwork experiences, linked closely to Syllabus outcomes. These experiences are deeply rooted in the physical world and tie in closely with Science and STEM. Biophysical interactions are the bedrock of Geography, understanding these processes leads us to a deeper knowledge of how humans impact and manage their place and environment. Fieldwork Connections specialises in: an in-depth knowledge of the NSW Geography Syllabus with a focus on secondary education. supporting teachers in integrating simple fieldwork into their classroom lessons. deepening teacher understanding of interactions in natural and urban settings. This includes biophysical processes in the natural environment, catchment management and other human impacts on the natural environment. training teachers and students to use simple and cost effective field equipment. training teachers to design and implement Geographical Fieldwork in their Geography lessons. available to travel to Sydney and regional areas.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - Fieldwork…</image:title>
<image:caption>is not only an important component of the NSW Geography Syllabus but it also encourages our students to engage with the Inquiry process and learn by doing. It connects knowledge gained in the classroom to real world experience and every day examples, flowing onto industry connections and future careers.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - What makes Fieldwork Geographical?</image:title>
<image:caption>Geographical Fieldwork has been developed to incorporate 7 elements, based on the GEOGStandards, literature and recent research as well as an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the implementation of the NSW Syllabus (K-10 and Stage 6). The theory behind Geographical Fieldwork came from ‘What makes a Geography assessment Geographical? (Caldis 2019) which incorporates not only content, but also fostering geographical inquiry, tools, skills and fieldwork. It also includes geographical thinking and concepts as well as communicating with appropriate terminology. Additionally, it is vital that Geographical Fieldwork is accessible to students and teachers as well as holding relevance and meaning to the learners. An in-depth explanation of Geographical Fieldwork is presented in ‘Fieldwork Simplified’, a Professional Development Workshop for Teachers of Geography.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - What does it look like?</image:title>
<image:caption>Fieldwork should be simple, accessible and meaningful. From my experience many classroom teachers find the idea of fieldwork a little bit daunting and they are unlikely to attempt to incorporate it into their lessons. Geographical Fieldwork provides simple ideas for teachers and student to make connections, using accessible tools within school grounds. Students gain meaning and relevance from their Place to better understand basic biophysical interactions and how humans cause change in an urban environment. This flows through to build a deeper respect for the natural world around them and their impacts upon it. Ultimately, helping to building well informed global citizens.</image:caption>

Services also include writing fieldwork programs and worksheets in-line with the relevant Syllabus requirements (integrating content, inquiry, tools and skills). Popular investigations include: Landscapes and Landforms (Stage 4). Water in the World (St.4) Environmental Change and Management (St.5) Earth’s natural systems (St.6) Ecosystems and global biodiversity - Great Southern Reef (St.6) Interdisciplinary, cross-curriculum fieldwork investigations can also be designed to incorporate Science fieldwork.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - PD Seminars</image:title>
<image:caption>For Sydney and regional NSW. Professional Development Workshops run for Teachers of Geography to explain the concepts behind Geographical Fieldwork, how to apply this to classroom lessons and practical experience for running fieldwork with a class. PD can also be run to train teachers in the use of simple, accessible field equipment. An audit of the schools exiting field equipment can be undertaken. This can be followed up with training for teacher on the use of the schools equipment and how to integrate it into fieldwork. Workshops are run with a small group for 1.5 to 2 hrs in length, at the school location, at a time to suit staff.</image:caption>
